This project began its life as a request from a Ph.D. researcher at the Air Force Institute of Technology. He was researching the use of convolutional neural networks in autonomous aerial refueling. The requirements requested were a pair of visual and a pair of infrared cameras to be mounted underneath a C-12C aircraft pointing aft, oriented 25 degrees down from horizontal.
